Here we have a natural blue flagstone patio, our first design and build as a company. The homeowners had a desire and a problem: they wanted a new patio but during heavy rainfall, surface run-off would funnel from the neighbor's yard, across the homeowners backyard into the desired patio area, then finally into the neighborhood planned drainage swale. In addition to the patio, there was a pre-existing water feature, a bubbling boulder in front view, that needed to be rebuilt.
Patio placement is a key factor when deciding to build. This project, the homeowner had a new addition to their home and wanted the patio outside the new addition.
A raised patio is built in two parts: the retaining wall and the patio top. Here you can see the depth of the retaining wall foundation. Note Travis bringing over another scoop of DGA.
The retaining wall design is slightly modified to fit this application. Instead of using drainage rock behind the wall, we used foundation rock. Water will shed through the grooves between flagstones.
As the wall is built the stone is compacted in lifts to ensure stability. Once the wall is complete, the foundation for the patio is installed. DGA is used again as the patio foundation.
With the patio foundation compacted, we start laying out the big stones to fill out the most area and use the smaller stones to fill in the rest. When necessary, stones are formed to fit the space.
Once satisfied with the layout, grout is installed. This process is critical and, if done incorrectly, can be a severe headache. A sealant is applied to bring out the natural colors within the stone.
Through the muck and mud, the surround stones are pulled from the water feature revealing the water capture system. The foundation settled underneath the boulder requiring rework.
The boulder is disassembled to access to foundation stone and install a new pump. The pump installation also required a new flexible hose be routed through the boulder.
New hardware and a cleaned basin, now the bubbling boulder is coming back together. Creek rock border and surrounding stones are reinstalled to hide the drainage grate below.
To connect each area of the new build and allow pass-through egress a walkway built from the same flagstones as the patio was installed.
The downspout from the new addition was plumbed around and away from the patio to ensure proper water management.
Check out how much the garden area around the water feature has blossomed. The contrasts of green foliage with red brick and dark mulch with light stones, really ties this area into a cohesive yet dynamic design.
What better reason to install a new outdoor living area other than to enjoy the serene beauty of nature with those you love. That is our mission and company philosophy wrapped into a nut shell: Bring Paradise Home!
